What is ESiSt?

We are a network of all public universities in the state of Brandenburg that enables international students to obtain a university entrance qualification.

"Erfolgreicher Studieneinstieg für Internationale Studierende im Bundesland Brandenburg" (ESiSt) is a network of all colleges and universities in Brandenburg that helps give international prospective students the opportunity to obtain a nationwide-valid language and subject-related university entrance qualification.

Similar to a preparatory college, the preparatory courses and entrance examinations are aimed at prospective students with university entrance qualifications that are not recognised as equivalent in Germany. The courses are aimed at applicants with degrees that meet the professional requirements for admission to higher education but who do not have the required language proficiency.

ESiSt enables these target groups to study a bachelor's degree course at the network's colleges and universities after they have attended language and/or specialised courses and successfully passed the university entrance examinations.

Furthermore, the network provides organisational support for prospective students and integrative measures on site at the respective university locations. The course programmes usually run for one or two semesters.

Network

All eight public universities of the Federal State of Brandenburg are represented in the ESiSt network.

The course programmes and the university entrance examinations are usually offered at three hubs: Cottbus, Frankfurt (Oder) and Potsdam.

Cooperating universities have been assigned to the following hubs:

Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg:
Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development
– Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau

European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder):
Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF

University of Potsdam:
University of Applied Sciences Potsdam
– Brandenburg University of Technology
– Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (W-Course)
– Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau (W-Course)
– Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (W-Course)

Prospective students from the cooperating universities generally attend the specialised or language preparation courses and sit the university entrance examinations at the assigned universities. After successfully passing the subject or language exams, they are then able to start studying in the chosen field of study at their chosen university in the state of Brandenburg.

Legal Information

The specialised courses and the associated university entrance examinations can be taken in the following areas of study:

  • Humanities, Cultural Studies and Social Sciences (including Sport (teaching) and Music (teaching)),
  • Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences,
  • Economics,
  • Engineering.

The successfully passed university entrance examination is accordingly valid for all courses of study in the state of Brandenburg that have been assigned to the chosen field of study. You can find an overview of the assignment of study programs to the fields of study here.

In accordance with Section 9 (2) of the Brandenburg Higher Education Act (BbgHG), participants are enrolled at the university where they would later like to study their specialised degree for the duration of the language and specialised courses. The duration of the preparatory language and specialised courses will not be credited for later courses of study. At the same time, the student status does provide special conditions with regard to student housing, semester tickets and other offers and discounts.

Requirements

“ESiSt" aims to enable the following target groups to start their studies in the Federal State of Brandenburg:

  • Prospective students, including refugees, who have obtained foreign educational qualifications entitling them to study at a higher education institution recognised in the issuing state and whose educational qualifications are not equivalent to a qualification pursuant to Section 9(2), clause 1, points 1 to 4 of the Brandenburg Higher Education Act.
  • Prospective students who have obtained educational qualifications entitling them to study at a higher education institution equivalent to a qualification pursuant to Section 9(2), clause 1, points 1 to 4 of the Brandenburg Higher Education Act but lack the required language proficiency.

Further admission requirements such as proof of German language skills or successfully passing the entrance examinations are governed by the respective hub universities.
